Distribution
About 8 species in the Mediterranean region and SW Asia; two species in Iraq.
Etymology
(Cynara, either from the Gr. κυνάρα, kynara, canine; or from the Lat. cinara, a plant native to the island of Cinara (now Zinara) in the Aegean.)
