The native range of this species is Mexico to S. Tropical America and Trinidad. It is a subshrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as a poison and a medicine and has environmental uses.

Herb with trailing stems rooting at the nodes, the branches and tips ascending, sparsely hairy or nearly glabrous throughout; leaves sessile or nearly so, obovate or oblong- obovate, 3–12 cm long, often strongly 3-lobed but sometimes merely toothed or subentire. Peduncles up to 5 cm long or more; heads mostly 1.5–2 cm broad; outer phyllaries ca. 12 mm long
